Apples are now abundant in the Farmer's Market

Templeton Farmers Market September 27, 2008

Apples! Apples! Apples! No denying it, Fall is here.

We arrived at the Templeton Park a little past nine, and the market was already bustling with buyers.Though we didn't get our "usual" place to park, we were able to find a nice parking place in the shade.

We started by going to the See Canyon Apple booth. They were already crowded with customers. I wanted to buy some more of their delicious Gala apples, but I was told it's now past their season. So what did they have instead? Let me tell you: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Jonagolds (a cross between a Johnathon and a Golden Delicious), Jonalicious (a cross between a Johnathon and a Red Delicious), Braeburns, Pippens, and McIntosh. Certainly I could find something! I ended up going with some Golden Delicious. (In my humble opinion, nothing beats a good Golden Delicious unless perhaps a Gala.) To paraphrase that stupid shallow song" If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with!" So I bought several after tasting a sample. Several vendors had apples, but I think the See Canyon booth had the biggest variety-as well as samples to taste.

On we went looking for what else had changed in the last week. We bought some nice Cabernet Sauvignon wine grapes with the intention of making another grape pie, see the featured Zin-Full Pie but with Cabernet grapes.

We also stopped at the Peacock Family Farm booth to pick up some Early Girl tomatoes for salads this week and a little basil for Orecchiette with Zucchini which I plan to make as well.

On we walked, stopping at Big John's booth from Santa Maria. There I found some luscious-looking small yellow and green zucchini to really make a beautiful pasta.

Then of course, I had to also take advantage of the reasonably-priced tomatoes and get a few for at least one fresh red sauce this week as well. Many of the vendors had tomatoes, so eying some Celebrity- variety ones (one of my favorites) I picked up enough to carry me through.

By this time, we're getting loaded-down, so not having anything else in mind that we needed, we decided to go home. We were going to a neighbor's BBQ late afternoon and had a few hours of cooking ahead of us to do. The morning had been fun! Seeing all the friendly faces and getting some good deals in the process. A tip from Sue!

Know your stove!

Not all stoves are equivalent! Your "medium" may be equivalent to another's "high." For instance, a lot of recipes use the "Medium heat" burner. But that can be too high if your sauteing garlic and don't want it to burn. It's better to err toward the lower setting.
