Chef Sue selecting Fresh Zucchini Blossoms at Templeton Farmer's Market

The Romantic Table- Farmers Market 5/31/08

The weather was perfect for our trip to the Templeton Farmers Market this morning- sunny and cool this morning but a warm day expected. All in all it was a nice morning and definitely worth the trip!

The weather was perfect for our trip to the Templeton Farmers Market this morning- sunny and cool this morning but a warm day expected. We arrived there just a few minutes past nine and the Olde Port Fisheries booth had a few people already lined up so we beat it over there to wait our turn. I bought some frozen sea scallops to use with my recipe Golden Saffron Cream Sauce with Ravioli for dinner tonight that my husband and I had been craving. We also scored some fresh Ahi tunafish for sandwiches (which is a big deal to us because they frequently sell out of this early.)

Shopping for fresh Oyster Mushrooms from Oak Hill Mushrooms
Our next stop was at the Pure and Simple Breads booth. With all their artisan breads it was hard to make a decision but settled on a luscious looking loaf of Pugliese(which is a rustic farm-style bread.)

Next up on the list was a stop at the Oak Hill Mushrooms booth. There we purchased some gorgeous Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms. We’ll start tonight’s meal off with an appetizer of these sautéed with some butter, garlic, and parsley. These freshly grown mushrooms are so showy we almost hate to cut them up!

Next up was a stop at the Five Dog Farm that has beautifully freshly-picked and rinsed salad greens for gorgeous healthy salads as well as to use on those tuna-fish sandwiches.

We proceeded on to the Peacock Family Farm Booth to buy some more of their gorgeous and fragrant Basil and their good-tasting hot-house tomatoes. Using these tomatoes, I’ve been able to make some of my favorite summer-time sauces such as my version of the Italian classic: Spaghetti with Eggplant, Fresh Tomato Sauce and Basil

Templeton Farmers Market

Templeton Farmers Market is the one of the oldest and largest farmers market in San Luis Obispo County. It is a real food lovers treat with everything from meat and fish to vegetables and fruit available.

Where: The Templeton City Park.

When: Saturdays, from 9:00am to 12:00pm
After there I went to the Paul Madonna booth for some Meyers lemons, then on down the line at the Haussler Organic Orchard, we spied some gorgeous Zucchini Blossoms and baby zucchini that we had to buy! Those will be our vegetable for tonight’s dinner!

By this time, our loads are getting pretty heavy so we decided to call it quits and get this luscious-looking stuff home while it’s still so fresh. All in all it was a nice morning and definitely worth the trip!

A tip from Sue!

Make your salt and pepper your "right -hand" aid

An easy tool to have handy at all times in your kitchen is your customized combined salt and pepper shaker. Buy a clear plastic shaker with a handle on it. Make yourself a "customized salt and pepper combo or "house blend." Ours is three parts ground pepper to one part salt. Having one of these handy really cuts the prep time down when doing breading and preliminary cooking!
