Edward Sellers 2006 Paso Robles Syrah

California Central Coast Wine Value Pick | Edward Sellers 2006 Paso Robles Syrah

In this California Central Coast Wine Value Review we take a look at Edward Sellers 2006 Paso Robles Syrah

If you have been reading this website, you will know that ever since Syrah was introduced to Paso Robles in the 80's the California Central Coast is fast becoming a Syrah enclave and challenging our beloved Zinfandel as a local favorite - we love it! The coastal influenced areas of the Paso Robles West Side are ideal areas to grow Syrah. So recently we asked Linda Cooks, manager of Paso Robles Albertson's wine department for a Central Coast Rhone style Syrah suggestion. She recommended we try Edward Sellers 2006 Paso Robles Syrah.

From the edwardsellers.com website:

"The nose is typical of the varietal, with plenty of dark fruit aromas and notes of smoke and earth. On the palate, the wine displays rich, smooth tannins, layers of complex and supple flavors, and excellent balance leading to a long finish."

Background.

Syrah is the great red wine from the Rhône region of France. Syrah produces powerful wines, deep violet nearly black in color, substantial alcohol, almost "chewy" body and aromas which tend to be more spicy than fruity. There are a number of different styles of making Syrah wine from the region, but un-blended with other wines (such as Viognier) is the style of Hermitage in northern Rhône or Australian Shiraz, and predominately the Central Coast Style.

Our Observations:

In the glass the wine was a deep garnet red with magenta overtones. In strong light the wine was transparent and clean. Swirling the glass, the wine nicely coated the glass side with long slow running tears indicating the characteristic substantial body Syrah is noted for and we were looking for.

When sniffing the wine, we noticed strawberry and blackberry aromas with an overtone spiciness of clove and vanilla.

On the palette, the flavor continued to open up with a nice sense of black pepper and tea. The taste was full, dry, smooth, good acidity and mild tannins. The Alcohol at 14.1% was substantial but balanced and not harsh.

The finish was smooth and substantial, leaving a complex, warm and long echo of the wine in the mouth.

This is very food friendly red wine, a good match with Mediterranean fare. With its berry and spice aromas and mild tannins, this wine is a great choice to accompany simple grilled meats or a robust pizza like Pizza Quattro Stagione - Four Seasons Pizza.
