Crispy Shoestring Onions Romantic Table Style
Our recipe for Crispy Shoestring Onions Romantic Table Style is one you can use as an appetizer, side-dish or wine-tasting accompaniment! These can be dangerous-It's hard to stop eating them!
Our recipe was inspired by the ones Chef Ian McPhee used to make. People from miles around would flock to his restaurants ("Ian's" in Cambria years ago, then "McPhee's Grill" in Templeton. ) Everyone raved and devoured his Shoestring Onions until for no explained reason he stopped serving them! --And they were SO good too! So, since we loved them so, we came up with our own version. The only prerequisite to make them, you DO need to use a mandoline to slice the white onions finely enough- that, and a little flour to coat the onion rings in prior to cooking and you'll be in flavorful mouth nirvana!
These are so easy and can be used so many ways and with so many other foods that you'll want to find new ways to use them! These are DEFINITELY a crowd-pleaser! And because you only use a few white onions, canola oil, a little bit of flour and kosher salt, they're economical enough to make often!
Preparation time: 10 minutesCooking time: 5 minutes
1 large White onion , peeled and thinly sliced (1/16")
1/4 cup All-purpose Flour
1 to 2 cups Canola Oil , depending upon pot used
1 If you are using a heavy bottom sauce pan(4-6 qt) for frying, add the cooking oil to a depth of about 1/2" deep. Heat oil to 375 degrees on stove-top.
2 Preferably using a mandoline, thinly slice (1/16") onions into rings.
3 Separate onion rings and toss in large plastic bag containing the flour. Shake well.
4 When oil is up to heat, shake off excess flour from onions and add to hot oil.
5 Cook until golden brown 3-5 minutes. You may need to turn over any strands not immersed in the oil. You may have to do these in batches, and Don't overcook!!! The onions cook really fast!
6 When at desired done-ness, using tongs or a slotted spoon, remove from the hot oil and drain on paper-toweled plate.
7 Add Kosher salt to taste preference and serve. ENJOY!!!!
These can be used as an appetizer accompaniment with wine, garnish or side-dish for beef, pork, seafood and vegetables --or just straight for a pick-me-up snack!
